Occupational Therapy is

….. improving each individual’s activities of daily living including their work and leisure.  Therefore, I look at children’s many varied activities at school (their work), their interactions and play (leisure)and support them and their families/teachers to be able to improve in these areas.

Areas I specialise in:

- Children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder, dyspraxia dyslexia and dysgraphia.  However I work with children looking at their strengths and areas of concern and work with specific issues not diagnoses/labels.  Therefore areas I specialise include:
- Emotional and attention regulation.
 - Sensory integration which includes sensory preferences or sensitivities (textures, smell, sound, vision, movement), sensory processing and modulation.
- Gross motor skills and dyspraxia.
- Fine motor and writing development. For older children I also help with touch typing skills and assessment for exam modifications.
- Visual perception development.
- Play skills and interaction.
- Organisational skills and executive functioning

Testimonials

Just a few comments by parents who have used my services:

Kate was an amazing Occupational Therapist and a wonderful support to my son. She helped us to understand what our child’s needs were. She supported my son to deal with his anxiety, sensory sensitivities and emotional regulation. Kate has been a great foundation to build his physical and emotional confidence and also she increased physical strength and coordination and to his overall flexibility. She worked with him for over 2 years. She is highly skilled and very attuned to building a secure and solid attachment with my son from day one. She has also been very aware and respectful of needs as a parent to a child with special needs. After 5 years my son still remembers her and talks about her now. Aylin-Former TCK Parent

Aylin - Former Tung Chung Kindergarten parent.

Kate’s calm and reassuring manner immediately put my son at ease and allow him to focus.  She was able to get him to engage in, and learn from, new activities.  The progress reflected in the classroom was noticeable and quite swift.  Additionally, Kate was always willing to speak to me, answering questions, providing feedback, and offering specific activities to scaffold the work she was doing in sessions.  I highly recommend Kate as an experienced, effective and compassionate Occupational Therapist.

Kate’s services onsite allow students to make connections between classroom experiences and their time with her. It enables the teaching team to use suggested strategies in our classroom settings as well as at home. Students enjoy the possibility of having peers join them in their sessions for play, and they enjoy Kate’s play-based approach. Her platform for sharing strategies and progress is easy to check in with and gives lots of information on what is happening during sessions as well as next steps. Kate has helped students in areas such as regulation - helping a child to slow their body down or increase arousal, improve attention and following directions, develop a wider variety of play ideas and help when a child is easily distracted.

I wish to write this letter of recommendation for Kate Powell who has worked with our son Samuel aged 7 over the past few months. I can honestly say that I hold her in the highest esteem professionally. Kate demonstrated the exceptional ability to highlight, understand and apply the skills necessary to assist Samuel in making such great progress over the past few months. He has now developed as set of skills which have allowed him not just to over come the issues he had but to allow him to be more confident in his own abilities, building determination and self belief in himself . She encourages as well as guides and demonstrates the compassion necessary for teaching all concerned the skills that can be used outside the one on one sessions. The several months that we have interacted with Kate, we have found her to be a polite, responsible, sincere, and an all-around well thought-of person. Her self-motivation and keen desire to stay current and her manner in which she instills confidence are to be commended. We would highly recommend Kate Powell.

Kate worked with our 4 year old son to help strengthen his hands and further develop his fine motor skills. The sessions were structured so that our son would have fun developing his fine motor skills which made the sessions enjoyable, interesting and very productive. Our son was always excited and enthusiastic about attending his sessions with Kate. We saw dramatic improvement in the short period of time our son spent with Kate. She always gave us great ideas for exercises and games to work on at home. Kate also worked very well with our school and meeting the school's expectations set for our son while also ultimately respecting and listening to our views as parents. My husband and I would highly recommend Kate.
